The Herald's Priorities: Cont'd

Yesterday, I commented on the Miami Herald's apparent priorities in covering the Iraq constitutional referendum, with some emphasis on the Herald's reliance on errant Knight-Ridder reporter, Tom Lasseter.

It's now been more than 24 hours since Iraq's constitutional referendum was held, and the Miami Herald's main page is still devoid of any link to the story.

There is, however, a link to this doom and gloom piece on the state of women's rights in post-Saddam Iraq.  (And on that topic, let's be clear: Under a regime that can do anything to anybody, anytime it wants, nobody has any civil rights.  The security of living at the sufferance of a dictator who uses rape, torture, and mass murder to keep himself in power is but an illusory security;  it is not the same thing as having the right to participate in the political process, however imperfect that process may be.)

The Herald's World News page features a link to this negative piece on the referendum co-authored by -- you guessed it -- Tom Lasseter.

Tom Fiedler, are you paying attention?

LATER: The Herald and the AP are in mourning.

Tom's been in Iraq since the start of the war. He's nearly been killed several times, and he's lost some friends at the bureau. Want to be the war's cheerleader? Go spend a few years over there yourself.

Nobody's asking a reporter to be the "war's cheerleader," Russ, so your comment is terribly disingenuous. What many of us have sought is balance. I haven't read one article by Lasseter that didn't ooze doom and gloom, or didn't contain commentary best reserved for the editorial page.

Frankly, I haven't paid much mind to what Lasseter or MacClatchy have written in some time, but his name came up in a discussion on HotAir so I posted links to this and other posts.
